Good Base Equals Quality Driveway Drainage System
For a driveway to be concreted and last, a good base is essential. The base also plays a role in the drainage of the area. Permeable materials that will pack closely together and drain water underneath the driveway are key. This protects the surface from water damage. Such materials that can be used include recycled asphalt and concrete or crushed stone.
Once you have a good base, you will be ready for the next step of the process. The base needs to be spread and compacted correctly along with time to settle and dry before moving on to the next step in the process.
On to Slanting
The next step in the process is the pitch and grade. This is where the slanting comes in. For the driveway to drain correctly, the concrete or asphalt must be laid at a slight slant. This will allow for water to run off after it occurs, with no places for pooling. The pitch needs to be set at a minimum of 1 inch every 10 feet. However, a 1 and ½ inch setting is recommended.
The driveway needs to be pitched from the home to the street. This allows water to run down into the road rather than into your home. If a mistake is made and a driveway pitches towards the house, water can pool in the garage or around the foundation of the home, which can lead to major issues such as water damage, mold or mildew.
While the process of laying the concrete driveway involves slanting as a part of the drainage process, a drainage system should also be installed. This will ensure water moves away and does not stand still on your driveway or approach your home. A good option is a footing drain. This installation requires a grade of 1% per eight feet to move water. This would naturally be done if you have the driveway installed with the proper pitch.
Now, a drainpipe will need to be installed to allow the water to drain. You can have this installed and covered with natural stone or filter fabric to look more pleasing to the eye. Once it is installed, you have an additional option for removing water from your driveway.
